This above all The central text of this piece is the well known passage
from Shakespeare's "Hamlet" wherein Polonius advises his departing
son " This above all: to thine own self be true and it must follow as the
night the day, that thou canst not then be false to any man". The
miniature watercolor paintings in the upper and lower areas represent
the day and night referred to in this speech. This central theme of
personal authenticity is woven into 6 additional passages in the design,
including quotations from Lao Tse, Euripides, Chaucer, Thoreau and
others. A further expression of the overall theme is found in the Celtic
knot work designs in which a single line weaves over and under itself
and back to its beginning, thus symbolizing not only eternity, but unity
and integrity.
The image size is 115/8" x 8 3/8" and has an ivory outer mat and a
gold inner mat. The frame is 16" x 20" carved guilt wood. $2000
